Padma Awards

Over the years, Padma Awards have become an instrument of recognizing the unsung nation builders. It is a great morale booster and certainly an inspiration and motivator for many.

The Padma Awards are announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. While the Padma Awards Committee applies no rigid criteria or trenchant formula for selection, it looks for an individual’s lifetime achievement while making a selection. There ought to be an element of public service in the accomplishments of the person to be selected. The award is given for ‘special services and not merely for long service. It should not be merely excellence in a particular field, but the criteria must be “excellence plus”. The usual practice is to invite recommendations every year from 1st May to 15th September from all State / UT Governments, Ministries/ Departments of the Government of India, Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan awardees and Institutes of Excellence. However, in highly deserving cases, Government could consider giving an award posthumously if the demise of the person proposed to be honoured has been recent, say within a period of one year preceding the Republic Day on which it is proposed to announce the award. A higher category of Padma Award can be considered in respect of a person who has earlier been conferred an award provided a period of at least five years has elapsed. However, in exceptionally deserving cases, a relaxation can also be considered. Padma Awards bring pride to not only the recipient but to all those associated with that individual. It is a major inspiration for many to follow.

The People’s Awards of India

Recognition Awards

Padma Awards speak volumes about an individual’s services and substantiate their credibility. Such appreciation and recognition are powerful motivators. It is a testament to the individual’s work, dedication and unique speciality.

The PeoplesPadma movement marks a paradigm shift in JanBhagidari for building a New India. In 2017, the decision to open up
recommendations for Padma Awards by regular citizens was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since then the Awards have really come a long way by honouring the true heroes of India. Awards, particularly, those accorded by the Government, must reflect our national character. Over the last few years, the Padma Awards have given more importance to the nominees’ work than their identities. The nomination process was opened to the public at large, thereby making it a people’s movement. The government has created an online nomination platform for common citizens to recommend the civilian “Padma” awards nomination annually. Recognizing our real heroes at the grassroots levels, the Awards acknowledges the tireless efforts of those rendering services to their communities and society. MyGov presents an unprecedented opportunity for citizens to get involved and be a part of this historic movement. The government has urged all citizens to identify talented persons whose excellence and achievements really deserve to be recognised from amongst women, SC, STs, divyang persons and who are doing selfless service to society and make their nominations or recommendations.

The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been honouring with Padma awards since 2017, many “unsung heroes”, for their tireless and relentless contributions to the society. The change in Padma Award has come recently from the past 3-4 years. Earlier, powerful personalities used to recommend for the awards and they used to get it. But now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his entire team, lookout for the people who are working for real. The process to send recommendations for awards has also become online. But above all, you can see how these people have been searched, which includes collecting reports from the District Collector.

From the area that person belongs to, so it can be confirmed that he/she is genuinely working, ” the Former Lok Sabha Speaker and an eminent Parliamentarian Sumitra Mahajan told Prasar Bharati News Services. The government received 46,000 nominations for the 2020 awards — in 2014, there were only 2,200 nominations. The government also launched the Padma Quiz in 2018, an online quiz that allows winners to attend the Padma Award ceremony in person at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The changes introduced have removed the ambiguity around nominations. It has also made the process of selection more transparent. The ability of people to participate in the award process is more accessible. The new criteria for selection have given hope to many who would never have considered themselves winning some of the country’s highest civilian awards. Now they can, and many have in the last couple of years applied and have been recoganised. No system of selection is without a flaw, but it is closest to a democratic process, that has been adopted to find the deserved candidates. The Padma Awards are conferred on the recommendations made by the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted by the Prime Minister every year. Padma Awards, which were instituted in the year 1954, is announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day except for brief interruption(s) during the years 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997.

India once stood among the countries with the highest Covid positivity rate. However, the rise in the number of cases did not bring down the zeal of our covid warriors (all the healthcare workers, scientists, municipality workers, etc.) from working hard in various situations like timely collection of samples, issuing of reports, handling patients with care, providing them with medications, production of vaccines and making it available to its citizens.

Over 20 lakh workers at 4.3 lakh vaccination centres helped achieve the feat over a period of nine months. According to Government sources, vaccine doses were administered at 4,30,000 vaccination sites over a period of nine months. Around 4-5 individuals were involved in each vaccination Centre. Going by that data, roughly over 20,00,000 workers were involved during this crucial period.

“The entire vaccination program of India has been Science-born, Science-driven and Science-based. Today not only are record investments coming in Indian companies but new employment opportunities are also being created for the youth. With record investment in start-ups, unicorns are emerging,” said PM Modi while addressing the nation.

“100 crore vaccinations are not just a figure, but a reflection of the strength of the country. A success of India and the success of every countryman,” added PM Modi.

Various leaders from various parts of the world congratulated PM Modi for achieving this milestone. With the completion of 1 billion vaccine doses, India stands as an inspiration to many!

The Lady in Black

One of the most respected film events in India, the Filmfare Awards honour artistic and technical excellence in the Hindi-language film industry of India.

Did you know that The Clares or the Clare Awards was the original name of the Filmfare Awards when it was first introduced in 1954 by the Filmfare magazine of The Times of India group? It was named after The Times of India film critic, Clare Mendonca who had died the same year. While Meena Kumari won the best actress for Baiju Bawra, Dilip Kumar got the best actor for Daag in the first year of these awards. Music director Naushad Ali won the best music award for Tu Ganga Ki Mauj for Baiju Bawra while Bimal Roy got the best director and best film for Do Beegha Zamin. The maiden awards function was held on March 21, 1954 at Metro Theatre of Mumbai. For the first awards, Hollywood actor Gregory Peck was invited to be the guest of honour. Unfortunately, his flight from Colombo got delayed and he could not make it to the awards ceremony. But Peck did attend the banquet the same night at Wellington Club (Gymkhana) in Mumbai.

While the winners were decided by the readers of Filmfare from all over India in the first two years, a dual voting system was developed in 1956 wherein both public and a committee of experts voted the winners. This was in contrast to the National Film Awards decided by a panel appointed by Indian Government. The Filmfare Awards honour artistic and technical excellence in the Hindi-language film industry. In addition to the flagship event, Filmfare has variants – Filmfare Awards South for South Indian cinema, Filmfare Marathi Awards for Marathi cinema and Filmfare Awards East for eastern Indian cinema. In 2017, the Short Film category was introduced to the Filmfare Awards, with Khamakha winning the People’s Choice Award for Best Short Film. Other short films like Chutney, Matitali Kusti and Taandav won awards as well. Apart from being the most coveted awards in the film industry, the Filmfare Awards are also famous for its statuette, often termed as The Black Lady or The Lady in Black. It depicts a woman with upraised arms as in a dance number with fingers touching. Generally made of bronze, weighing around five kilos and 46.5 cm tall, the statuette was originally designed by NG Pansare under the supervision of The Times of India’s art director Walter Langhammer. However, in the 25th year of these awards, the statues were made in silver while the 50th year saw the statues in gold.

Only a few transformations were made to The Black Lady till 2012 but in 2013, the trophy was given a 3D look as the organisers felt it necessary to move with the times in these days of technological advancements. At the 2021 Filmfare Awards, Irrfan won the best actor in a leading role (male) award for Angrezi Medium, best actor in a leading role (female) went to Taapsee Pannu for Thappad which also won the best film award. The best actor in a supporting role (male) went to Saif Ali Khan for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior while Farrokh Jaffar won the best actor in a supporting role (female) for Gulabo Sitabo. The best lyricist award went to Gulzar for song Chhappak for the movie by the same name and Pritam won the best music album award for Ludo. Raghav Chaitanya was declared winner in the best playback singer (male) category for Ek Tukda Dhoop (Thappad) while Asees Kaur took home The Black Lady in the best playback singer (female) category for Malang in the movie by the same name.

The world knows and praises artistes and performers who sizzle on the screen but the ones we meet here are the backbones of a movie.

Farming the Future: Covid19 and beyond

Farming the Future: Covid19 and beyond

By Krishnan Pallassana, Country Director India, Digital Green

Recognition Awards

“I often ask myself what will happen if I stopped working? When floods came, I had to be in my field to drain the waters. When the pandemic came, I had to be there to take care of my crop and fend for my family. Droughts, floods or pandemics, we don’t quit. We cannot quit. If I quit, we have to forsake our income and there won’t be food at home. My neighbors won’t be able to work on my farm and they will lose their income. We will lose the vegetables that we grow that can feed many families. Whatever may happen to the world, we farmers can’t and don’t quit even for a day.”

These are words of Koyu, a 67-year-old farmer from my own village in Kerala who grows paddy and vegetables in his 4 acres pf land. I was speaking to him over the phone. There was both anger and anguish in his words.

“You know’, he continued, ‘everyone takes us for granted. When everything shut down… transport, railways, postal services, banks, markets and offices including those of the government, we were the only ones working. Without any complaint or expectation. We continued to produce, we toiled. When we produce less, we earn less. When we produce more, even then we earn less.” Koyu did not mince his words while sharing his frustration.

When I had this conversation with Koyu a few weeks ago, at Digital Green we were speaking to hundreds of farmers in various states of India where we work in. As an organization working with and for small scale farmers, it was important for us understand how they are coping with the pandemic and associated uncertainties. We designed the survey in a way that it would help us and our partners to understand specific issues faced by the farmers so that we can help them overcome the situation and recover faster. The survey report is available here.

Nearly one-third of small scale farmers we interviewed were afraid of contracting the Coronavirus. There is a wide spread fear and anxiety, among both men and women, on their ability to continue production and find a market for their produce. Farmers have indeed become more vulnerable due to the pandemic. However, nearly all of them said they will grow crops for the Kharif season. Farmers are not letting the calamity to deter their intent or morale.

For a society that is reeling under multiple waves of a never-seen-before humanitarian crisis that has crippled our lives, society and economy, the path to recovery can be hard and arduous. Our farmers are already playing a crucial role in that path to recovery. They are ensuring productivity, generating employment, feeding our people and most importantly regenerating the rural economy. For the country as a whole, from policy makers to practitioners, from the civil society to the common people, helping farmers at this hour means helping the economy to recover faster and build back better.

While there are many concerns the survey brought to light and that requires immediate attention, the survey findings also point towards some important future considerations. Of these, there are three that I want to highlight, so that future pandemics, calamities, shocks and stressors do not derail our decades of development investment.

#Power2choose: Reimagining farmers’ advisories

Let us not treat farmers are mere recipients of aid and subsidies who are supposed to till and toil for the society. Time has come to accord them the importance they deserve as active partners and participants in the development process. Let us empathize with farmers and bank upon their immense wisdom, patience and resilience. To help achieve that, farmers need timely and efficient access to information to produce better, market better and claim reasonable realization for their efforts. Digital technology is that opportunity to empower farmers with choices to make informed decisions. Digital tools can help them access specific information that they want – what, when and how. Let them decide. Let them choose.

#markets4farmers: Reimagining markets

Today, the investment our government has made towards Digital India is slowly bearing fruits. More villages are getting connected to networks. Mobile telephony has reached every nook and corner of the country. Our data costs are among the lowests in the world. Smartphone usage is rising rapidly. Smart phones, data and digital tools can combine to bring about a radical transformation to markets. Digital connectivity can create hyperlocal market loops, connecting local producers and local consumers. Popular applications like Whatsapp and Telegram can help farmers build digital storefronts and transact with local consumers. Let digital technology build a network of farmers and farmer’s groups across the vast expanse of India. Let technology adapt to the needs of farmers than asking farmers to adapt to the technology. Let millions of interconnected farm-enterprises blossom.

#FarmerFirst: Reimagining data

We have been taking our farmers for granted. They have historically lacked access to technology and information and in the modern data driven agri-ecosystem, they don’t even understand that their own data is one of their biggest assets. Many kept mining their data while farmers also freely shared their data with many. Privacy, trust, confidentiality and security has a very different meaning in their social context and relations. The time has come for us to make them aware of the value of their data and help them make informed decisions. While global and national efforts to integrate and share data across platforms are a welcome move and in the right direction, let the first and most important guiding principle be to put farmers at the center or at the apex of such initiatives. Efforts to streamline and make data efficient will not bear desired results if it is not primarily helping farmers to improve their lives and livelihoods.  Help farmers discover the primacy of their own data. Let Farmers be First.

Achuth Gowda, Founder & Managing Director, Fidelitus Corp Property Services Pvt. Ltd.

Our fight with Covid-19

The past one year has been extremely tough for many, but I am glad to have been through this since it made me realize the true potential of my organization and the heights we can reach. The Pandemic has in fact changed the way we think and work as an organization for the better.

We started the year 2020 at our new premises Brigade Software Park with a new zeal and had the complete plan ready for the coming year. Little did we know that it was just the calm before the storm. In March 2020, the global pandemic made its appearance and turned the world upside down.

At the peak of our business, the Government announced Lockdown 1.0, followed by lockdown 2.0, lockdown 3.0 for 21 days and so on. The biggest challenge for us was to overcome the downfall in the real estate market which makes up the core of our

business. We, as Fidelitus had to immediately come up with other alternatives to keep the company going. This is when we started our fumigation and sterilization services and were able to pick it up well with the increasing demand due to the pandemic. The Government recognized us and gave permission to fumigate Government Schools and SSLC exam centers. We also provided disinfectant tunnels for police stations in Karnataka. In no time, we were fumigating, corporates, the major Government Buildings and Public sector unions and slowly extended this to residentials as well.

During these times, we got a major break in the Real estate vertical when we leased out giant e-commerce organisation. When the IT and E-Commerce market was dropping down with the work from home culture in place, it became tough to keep the numbers growing. This is when we explored into a new market, logistics with major players in the industry as our clients post-lockdown. This was our new ray of hope during the completing of the second quarter.

When we had to deliver the projects to clients in the stream of German based electronics manufacturers, Wipro’s domestic IT Business – Leader in India’s MPS Market , parent firm of JSW’s, we faced a shortage of resources from materials to manpower. Even in this critical situation, my project team ensured that there were no shortcomings in the delivery of all the projects and ensured that they were completed on time. We saw a drop in manpower in the Facility Management team as well and to overcome this, we got into tender participation to PSUs and Government bodies. This gave a boost to our manpower which helped us target residential spaces as well.

Post lockdown, for a noble cause we organized India’s first ever masterpiece sculpture exhibition Malenadina Mukhagalu with 50+ chief guests including Bengaluru South MP and My friend Tejasvi Surya, Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research – Dr. C N Manjunath and many along a period of 21 days who were honored with art from the Fidelitus Art Gallery, to boost the confidence of the artists, encourage their art and show that our Art Gallery is up and running.

The downsizing of companies became a major threat to our Recruitment vertical. This is when our initiative with MP Tejasvi Surya, Sansad Udyog Mitra though Shilpa Foundation came into place during the last quarter. A job drive is organized on the last Sunday of every month which has helped 1000+ candidates land a job from the entry level to senior level positions.

As we believe in giving back to the society, Shilpa Foundation provided smart class equipment to Government schools, basic essentials to the covid warriors for risking their lives for the well-being of others. As a step towards a greener environment, a sapling plantation program, Think Green was organized.

Everything was running smoothly in the organization, with all the verticals performing their best. This is when I saw the toughest phase of my life. I was tested positive for Covid during the festive season*, which kept me away from the Organization for three weeks. I was reunited with my team on the prosperous day of Diwali when I was filled with joy as I could see that, in spite of my absence, my team was able to keep the performance graph of the company going high. This is when I realized the true potential of my team and the wonders they can achieve even without my guidance. The beginning of new year, filled us with positive energy and pushed us to close the transactions with Engineering and Technology Services Organisations where we assisted them to move to better locations with wide range space of 40,000 Sq.ft (Hosur Road) in the silicon valley , Another 25,000 Sq.ft (Electronic City –Phase 1) for US based Engineering Services Company meanwhile while closing the 1st quarter of 2021 our transaction team completed with the finishing move of 15,000 Sq.ft space (Old Airport Road) for leading Artificial Intelligence(AI) Company and in the end of maiden quarter year majorly we closed with 2,50,000 Sq.ft Space(Hosur Road) for the giant pharma company by getting the project approved. During the Unlock series of the Pandemic projects including ABVP, MyString and Sowparnika were launched.

I was overwhelmed when I was awarded the prestigious Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Award on September 10th 2020, for our contribution to the society during the Covid Times. This award is wholly dedicated to my team for the efforts and hardwork they’ve put in to make all our initiatives successful and empowering. I am happy to be a part of such a dynamic team and

how we’ve been able to overcome all the hurdles and rise to the top even during such tough times and promise to never stop hustling and working hard. Tough times may come and go but tough people stay forever. We do not have control on what life throws at us, but what we can control are the decisions and steps we take during the tough times and that is what makes us different from others. Facing such difficulties will only make us come back stronger and tougher making us ready for the next challenge.

People begin to become successful the minute they decide to be – Harvey Mackay.

United Nations and WHO have highlighted the challenges of gender inequality and the struggles during the Covid. A UN report states that responding to the pandemic is not just about rectifying long-standing disparities, but also about building a resilient world in the interest of everyone with women at the centre of recovery. A profound shock to our societies and economies, the COVID-19 pandemic underscores society’s reliance on women both on the front line and at home, while simultaneously exposing structural inequalities across every sphere, from health to the economy, security to social protection. In times of crisis, when resources are strained and institutional capacity is limited, women and girls face disproportionate impacts with far – reaching consequences that are only further amplified in contexts of fragility, conflict, and emergencies. Hard fought gains for women’s rights are also under threat.

Smt Rekha Sharma, Chairperson, NCW said, “During Covid especially women teachers and other professionals have done tremendous work, taking care of their home and professional commitments. This is a great effort and should be complimented wholeheartedly by all.” NCL has been at the forefront of gender equality and has taken several steps to encourage them to take up challenging assignments. “As a result, we have not only women officers, but also women in the field. I have personally taken special efforts to highlight their work to all working in NCL. Workshops and seminars have also been organized to highlight the importance of women workforce in an organization and their contribution to the economy,” said Bimlendu Kumar, Director (P) NCL. Priyank Kanoongo, Chairperson, NCPCR, said, “The lockdown allowed us to look at the child protection in a new light. We realized that the perceptions need to change with the ground realities. The commission enhanced our reach eight times, but the media wrote that during the lockdown, the child abuse has increased by eight times.”

He also pointed out that online child sexual abuse during lockdown was a concern. “We approached all social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and others and ensured that children who were using the online system to gain education are protected from any online abuse,” said Kanoongo. The above sentiments were elucidated by the eminent people working on the gender issues and child protection at the webinar on National Women Summit 2020 organized by Indian Achievers’ Forum. It was attended by Smt Rekha Sharma, Chairperson, NCW as Chief Guest along with Shri Priyank Kanoongo, Chairperson, NCPCR; Guest of Honour Sh. Ashish Garg, President. ICS; Shri Bimlendu Kumar, Director (P) NCL; Mrs Rajita Bagga, President, Sri Sri University and more.

Mission Covid Suraksha

Mission Covid Suraksha

As on June 30, 2021, India’s cumulative Covid vaccination coverage exceeded 33.54 crore. The government aims to cover 250 million “priority people” by the end of July but experts feel the pace of vaccination has been slow and needs to be accelerated.

With the first dose given to a health worker at AIIMS Delhi, India had become the first major developing country to begin the world’s biggest Covid-19 vaccination programmes earlier this year. It was on January 4 that the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) approved two vaccines against Covid-19 – Covishield developed by the Serum Institute of India (SII) and Covixin by Bharat Biotech for restricted use in emergency situations. The DCGI approved these vaccines after it examined the recommendations of the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). As on June 30, India’s cumulative Covid vaccination coverage exceeded 33.54 crore. The government aims to cover 250 million “priority people” by the end of July. But experts say that the pace of vaccination has been slow and unless the drive is scaled up, the target could be missed. And with the second wave of Covid-19 hitting the world with vengeance, more and more people are demanding the vaccination be given to all irrespective of their age. The government had initially planned to conduct vaccination
drives age-wise.

The vaccine production was ramped up amid the deadly second wave which peaked in April- May. Apart from the two Indian vaccines – Covishield
and Covaxin – and Russia’s Sputnik V (developed by Dr Reddy’s Lab in association with Russia-based Gamaleya National Centre.) currently available in the country, two billion doses of the local version of Novavax (called Covavax), being produced by Serum Institute of India, will also be made available soon. As per the information available, Novavax was found to be more than 90 per cent effective in a ate-stage US-based clinical trial.

Further, the government has also ordered 300 million doses of another vaccine from Indian firm Biological E, the first Indian private vaccine-making company. The vaccine, developed in collaboration with US-based Dynavaxand Baylor College of Medicine, has not yet received emergency approval. But, it is in the key third phase of clinical trials and is likely to be available in the next few months. The government has also given approval to Indian pharma company Cipla to import Moderna vaccine, which has shown nearly 95 per cent efficacy against Covid-19. “The new drug permission for restricted emergency use is now in operation,” says a Health Ministry official, adding that the aim is to vaccinate all Indians by the end of this year – this though seems a bit difficult considering the shortage of doses and vaccine hesitancy among people. Vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna may also be available in India soon.

ia soon. This apart, there are some other pharma companies which too are in the process of developing vaccines against covid 19. These are in different stages of trials to test safety and efficacy. Ahmedabad-based ZydusCadila is developing ZyCov-Di vaccine. Pune-based Genova has made India’s first mRNA vaccine, HGCO19, in collaboration with Seattle-based HDT Biotech Corporation. It has done so by using bits of genetic code to cause an immune response. Besides, Bharat Biotech is also developing a nasal vaccine.

Let’s talk about the two Indian vaccines Covishield is a Recombinant Chimpanzee Adenovirus vector vaccine, which encodes the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) glycoprotein with technology transfer from Astra ZenecaOxford University while Covaxin is Whole Virion Inactivated Corona Virus Vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech in partnership with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV). The company received the virus seed strains from ICMR and NIV and the vaccine is developed on the Vero cell platform. Covishield is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus (known as an adenovirus) from chimpanzees. It has been modified to look more like coronavirus – although it can’t cause illness. When the vaccine is injected into a patient, it prompts the immune system to start making antibodies and primes it to attack any coronavirus infection. Covaxin is an inactivated vaccine which means that it is made up of killed coronaviruses, making it safe to be injected into the body. When administered, immune cells can still recognise the dead virus, prompting the immune system to make antibodies against the pandemic virus. Both the vaccines follow two dose-regimens and can be to be stored.

at 2°C-8°C. As per the DCGI, Covishield is 70.42 per cent effective and Covaxin is ‘safe and provides a robust immune response’. Covaxin has an efficacy rate of 81 per cent. With the vaccination drive going on in full swing, both the companies have sought funds from the Central Government to ramp up the production. A government-appointed interministerial panel on vaccine manufacturing visited the manufacturing facilities of both the Bharat Biotech and the Serum Institute to review the production status. RenuSwarup , Secretary , Department of Biotechnology, has said that the government is ready to provide assistance under the Covid Suraksha scheme. Swarup emphasised the scheme is meant to support the research and development of coronavirus vaccines.

Mission Covid Suraksha was launched by the Central Government in November 2020 to help accelerate the development of approximately five-six vaccine candidates and ensure these are brought closer to licensure and introduction in the market. Meanwhile, true to its philosophy of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam, India is also supplying the vaccine to a large number of countries across the world. It has shipped tens of thousands of free doses of Covid-19 vaccines to several countries under “vaccine diplomacy”. It sent 64 million doses of vaccines to 84 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. The recipient countries include the UK, Canada, Brazil and Mexico. Both Covishield and Covaxin have been exported so far – some in the form of “gifts”, others in line with commercial agreements signed between the vaccine makers and the recipient nations, and the rest under the Covax scheme, which is led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and hopes to deliver more than two billion doses to people in 190 countries in less than a year. The foreign ministry says India will continue to supply vaccines all over the world after taking into account domestic requirements and international demands and obligations
