Dr. Deepa Deshpande is a leading technology and business leader in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. Her extensive career has been focused on the development and advancement of new drug and medical device-based treatments for diseases with unmet medical need. Dr. Deshpande received her undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from Mumbai University. She was subsequently awarded a scholarship from West Virginia University in the US, to conduct research in the nascent field of mRNA and gene-based therapy.
Her extensive innovative work earned her a Masters and Ph.D degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Her research won her several accolades, including the prestigious Excellence in Graduate Research Award from AAPS (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists) and the American Association of Indian Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAiPS).
Dr Deshpande has held positions of increasing responsibility in various pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, then founded Universal Regulatory Inc in 2009, a consulting services firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area, focused on providing global regulatory affairs guidance to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries.
Under her leadership, the company has expanded and established a successful track-record for delivering high-quality services to its clients. Dr Deshpande and the expert team at Universal have provided consulting and advisory support to over 100 pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients globally, helping successfully navigate the complex regulatory landscape of pharmaceutical drug development.
Under Dr Deshpande’s leadership, Universal Regulatory has had an outstanding record of delivering successful progression of a multiple new therapies and device technologies from early research into human clinical trials, and marketing authorization in therapeutic areas including cancer, antibiotics, antivirals, pain management, autoimmune diseases, liver diseases, central nervous system disorders among others.
Deepa is a sought-after speaker and has served as an organizer, chairperson and speaker at several workshops, symposia on topics related to regulatory affairs, drug development, and women in pharmaceutical sciences at conferences and events around the world. Deepa is a recognized contributor in pharmaceutical community and has been an active volunteer in various non-profit and pharmaceutical organizations – twice elected by membership of pharmaceutical organization (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists) to a leadership role. She is steadfast in her passion to help drive meaningful therapies into the marketplace to help provide better quality of life for patients and improve treatment outcomes.
