President approves 127 Gallantry awards

President approves 127 Gallantry awards, on the eve of 79th Independence Day

On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Smt. Droupadi Murmu approved 127 Gallantry awards and 40 Distinguished Service awards for personnel of the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces. These include 04 Kirti Chakras; 15 Vir Chakras; 16 Shaurya Chakras; 02 Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry); 58 Sena Medals (Gallantry); 06 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry); 26 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry); 07 Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medals; 09 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and 24 Yudh Seva Medals. The President has also approved 290 Mention-in-Despatches – 115 personnel of the Indian Army, 05 of the Indian Navy, 167 of the Indian Air Force and 03 of the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB).

The list of awardees features some of the finest examples of courage and sacrifice including those who played a key role in the success of Operation Sindoor. Three of the Kirti Chakras and four of the Shaurya Chakras will be awarded posthumously, the defence ministry said. Most of the personnel honoured displayed extraordinary bravery and leadership during counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has recently witnessed a surge in militant activity, with near-daily encounters testing the resolve of India’s security forces.

Gallantry Awards: Honouring Courage Beyond Compare

The Kirti Chakra, Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the field of battle. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Maha Vir Chakra. It is second in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards, comes after Ashoka Chakra and before Shaurya Chakra

The Kirti Chakra was conferred posthumously on Colonel Manpreet Singh KC, SM, Rifleman Ravi Kumar, and DSP Humayun Muzammil Bhatt, who laid down their lives during counter-terror operations in Jammu & Kashmir. Major Malla Ram Gopal Naidu is the only living recipient this year.

Colonel Manpreet Singh, KC, SM, a highly decorated officer of the Indian Army, made the supreme sacrifice during Operation Anantnag. Commanding the 19 Rashtriya Rifles, he had been at the forefront of counterinsurgency efforts in the district since 2023. Over nearly five years with the battalion, Col Singh took part in numerous high-risk operations, earning respect for his courage, leadership, and unwavering dedication.

Rifleman Ravi Kumar of the 63 Rashtriya Rifles (Bihar Regiment) laid down his life during a fierce encounter in the Narla area of Rajouri district, Jammu. Earlier, in 2017, his unit had been deployed in Bandipora, J&K, for counter-terrorist operations. Known for his bravery and commitment, Rfn Kumar epitomised the spirit of a soldier who stood firm in the service of the nation until his last breath.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Muzammil Bhatt of the J&K Police also made the ultimate sacrifice during an operation against terrorists at Kokarnag in 2023. His fearless action and devotion to duty created an enduring example of valour and patriotism.

Major Malla Ram Gopal Naidu displayed remarkable leadership during a high-stakes counter-infiltration operation along the Line of Control in Kupwara district in 2023. Leading his team from the front, he neutralised four heavily armed infiltrators, thereby saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. While serving with the Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir, Major Naidu successfully intercepted a group of five intruders after receiving precise intelligence, displaying exceptional tactical acumen and indomitable courage in the face of danger.

The Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award after the Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra, was conferred on 15 personnel for acts of exceptional bravery on the battlefield, on land or in the air or at sea.

The Shaurya Chakra, a military decoration awarded for acts of valour, courageous action, or self-sacrifice other than in the face of the enemy was conferred on 16 personnel. It is the third-highest peacetime gallantry award, ranking after the Ashoka Chakra and Kirti Chakra, and is placed just above the Yudh Seva Medal in order of precedence.

A Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry) is awarded to Army personnel who have already received the Sena Medal (Gallantry) and once again display extraordinary courage or devotion to duty. In such cases, instead of a new medal, a bar is added to the ribbon of the original decoration, signifying the repeat honour. When the medal is awarded a second time, a bar is attached to the existing ribbon, representing the additional award.

Service-Specific Gallantry Medals

  • The Sena Medal (Gallantry) was awarded to 58 Army personnel for exceptional devotion to duty in hostile land operations.
  • The Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) honoured 6 Navy personnel for bravery at sea.
  • The Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) was conferred on 26 Air Force personnel for gallantry in aerial combat.

Distinguished Service Awards

Distinguished Service Awards: Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Yudh Seva Medal were conferred on 40 senior officers. These are not gallantry awards which recognise direct acts of courage, instead, they are given for outstanding leadership, planning, direction, or distinguished service by senior officers and personnel during war, conflict, or hostilities.

The awards are also a tribute to the success of Operation Sindoor, where India’s soldiers, sailors, and air warriors rose as one showing unmatched courage, seamless coordination, and an unbreakable will in the face of grave danger. Their supreme sacrifice and inspiring leadership are not just tales of the battlefield but lasting symbols of devotion to the motherland. These bravehearts remind the nation that behind every dawn of freedom stand the sentinels of the Armed Forces, guarding India’s sovereignty with unwavering resolve and the promise that no challenge will ever dim their spirit.

Vision Beyond Sight: Ms. Meghana Aduri’s Mission to Empower Visually Impaired and Tribal Students in India

In a world where accessibility is often an afterthought, Ms. Meghana Aduri, a youth advocate and founder of Vision Beyond Sight, is ensuring no student is left behind. Her grassroots initiative bridges the gap between marginalized communities and inclusive education, empowering visually impaired students and tribal children in India.

Inspired by her visually impaired music teacher, she began converting inaccessible print textbooks into digital formats. Today, she has digitized over 140,000 pages of school, college, and competitive exam content for print-disabled students. But she soon realized that content alone wasn’t enough—students needed the right tools to access it.

This led to Seedlings for Education, a community fundraiser where she organized plant sales and taught violin lessons to sponsor assistive devices like screen-reader-enabled laptops and smartphones. These efforts have empowered over 400 visually impaired students to learn independently.

Understanding that financial barriers hinder many from attending premier institutions like IIT and IIM, she launched a scholarship program covering tuition and hostel fees. With a unique “pay it forward” model, beneficiaries pledge to support another student once they are established, creating a cycle of empowerment.

Beyond urban educational access, she extends her impact to tribal villages like Allampally, teaching violin and coordinating access to educational resources. For these underserved regions, her efforts are about more than skills—they are about confidence, independence, and inclusion.

Her work has earned her global recognition, including being named a Top 100 Emerging Innovator by Horn Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware, receiving special honors from the City of Frisco, and becoming a semi-finalist in the Ashoka Foundation and Taco Bell Foundation’s Ambition Accelerator.

Through Vision Beyond Sight, she is proving that youth-led, community-driven innovation can create lasting change.

CM Rekha Gupta Budget 2025 in Delhi

Delhi Budget 2025: CM Rekha Gupta Unveils ₹1 Lakh Crore Budget

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta presented the FY26 Budget outlining ten focus areas, including cleaning Yamuna, economic empowerment of women, infrastructure development, electricity, roads, and water. Describing it as a “historic budget,” CM Gupta emphasized that it serves as a blueprint to make the national capital “Atmanirbhar” (self-reliant). The first budget of the newly-formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in the national capital, amounting to a record ₹1 lakh crore, reflects a significant 31.5% increase from the previous year.

“This is not an ordinary Budget, this Budget is the first step to develop Delhi which was ruined in the past 10 years. Delhi went down in every aspect of development in the past decade.” she said.

Among the major announcements, ₹2,144 crore has been allocated for the PM Jan Arogya Yojana, while ₹5,100 crore will fund the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, which provides ₹2,500 per month to eligible women. To improve connectivity in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), ₹1,000 crore has been set aside, with ₹3,843 crore allocated for road and bridge infrastructure. The government will also install 50,000 CCTV cameras across the city to enhance women’s safety. Additionally, ₹100 crore will be used to establish 100 Atal Canteens to provide affordable meals, and ₹696 crore has been reserved for developing slum clusters and JJ colonies.

A significant portion of the budget—₹9,000 crore—has been allocated for clean drinking water and sanitation. This includes ₹500 crore for repairing and upgrading sewer treatment plants (STPs) and ₹250 crore to replace old sewer lines. The long-standing issue of cleaning the Yamuna River will receive ₹500 crore, with plans to ensure only treated water enters the river through the decentralization of 40 STPs. In the education sector, ₹100 crore has been allocated to open new “CM Shri Schools,” inspired by the PM Shri Schools, while ₹750 crore will provide free laptops to 1,200 students passing Class 10.

Other key allocations include ₹210 crore for expecting mothers, offering nutrient kits and an allowance of ₹21,000. The transport sector has received ₹12,952 crore, and the government will replace pink tickets with special cards to provide free bus rides for women and curb corruption. A ₹100 crore pilot project will focus on removing overhead electrical lines and shifting high-tension power lines underground. To combat pollution, ₹300 crore has been allocated, with an additional ₹506 crore designated for the environment and forest department. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been granted ₹6,897 crore, and the government plans to construct a new jail on the city’s outskirts to ease congestion at Tihar Jail. In a cultural initiative, ₹30 crore has been set aside to host an International Film Festival in the capital.
