Anil Agiwal: Mobile Communications Expert & Innovator
Mr. Anil Agiwal is a seasoned mobile communications expert and a prolific inventor, recognized ‘for inventing and standardizing radio access technologies for complex issues critical to the 4G and 5G mobile communications’.
In his current role as a Director at Samsung Research’s Advanced Communications Research Center in Seoul, South Korea, Mr. Agiwal leverages his expertise and experience to research on key problems and develop innovative solutions for 5G and beyond 5G mobile communication. He represents Samsung in 3GPP, a global standard body which develops internationally agreed-upon technology specifications for mobile communications. Globally approved technology specifications are key to the success of mobile communication as they enable global deployment, interoperability of devices/infrastructure from different vendors and give users access to better products and services at lower prices. He collaborates with global R&D teams for innovations including critical patents and intellectual property for the advancement of mobile communications.
Mr. Agiwal graduated with Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra in 2000 and an M.Tech in Computer Science & Information Technology from IIT Kharagpur in 2001. He joined Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore in 2002 as a Software Engineer and later relocated to Samsung, South Korea in 2013. In his two decades of affiliation with Samsung in various roles and responsibilities from Software Engineer to Director, he has made significant contributions towards software design, development and commercialization of 3G/4G modem in addition to research and standardization. He has also invented and standardized several 4G and 5G radio access technologies for lower and higher frequency bands (licensed and unlicensed), which enables enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine type communications, ultra-reliable and low latency communications; and support verticals such as Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications.
In Nov 2021, Mr. Agiwal was enlisted in the global list of prolific inventors with more than 200 US patents under his name. It’s an all-time list of inventors with 200+ patent grants in United States of America and currently includes 336 inventors. Mr. Agiwal holds more than 450 patents worldwide including 224 patents granted in United States of America. These patents include innovative radio access technologies for 4G/5G/5G-Advanced mobile communications. Mr. Agiwal is also receiver of several major awards and recognitions at Samsung, including two Samsung Electronics’ Gold Award, the Samsung Best Paper Bronze Award, the Samsung Research Innovator Award, five Inventor of the Year Awards, two Patent of the Year Awards, the Business Contribution Award, the MD’s Appreciation Award and the Beyond Boundaries Award. He is also a Senior Member of IEEE and has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Mr. Agiwal owes his success to the blessings of his family, guidance of his mentors, colleagues and innovation culture in his organization. “It’s a long journey between the inception of an idea to the reception of patent grant and/or the idea getting implemented in the product.
