Sanjay returned to Assam from Switzerland on the request of previous government to help contribute to Swachh Bharat Mission. He is currently developing projects with the vision of creating zero waste towns in Tinsukia, Nagaon and Titabar. With other agencies he also works in Indonesia, Uganda, Bangladesh, India, Ukraine, Colombia, Kenya, Swaziland, Philippines under various international organizations as senior advisor and consultant. He has taken Tinsukia from the Dirtiest town in the country in 2017-18 to fastest moving clean cities in Swachh Sarvekshan 2022. His ultimate dream is to create more than 1000 sustainable employments with 50% women in it at all level.
His key global expertise is in Integrated Solid Waste Management, Financial Planning for Urban Services including Integrated Waste Management, Recycling Value Chain, Employment Generation, and advocacy for zero waste systems. Dr. Sanjay K Gupta has Ph D in Social Sciences and professional background as Environmental & Social Development Specialist with 21 years of experience in Waste Management, Recycling, Livelihood, Organic product promotion and monitoring of large programs and projects. Beside a trained researcher, he has received and imparted extensive trainings in waste management in more than 50 countries to waste management and WASH related areas. His key experiences are advising national and provincial governments in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe on waste management strategy development, program design, management and monitoring of programs and projects. He has extensive experiences of waste management, recycling and livelihood in both developed and developing countries.
He provides sector strategy development programs for waste management & WASH in developing countries. He regularly writes research papers on water and waste issues and has contributed in books like Global Waste Management Outlook for UNEP and UN Habitat, WASH Joint Sector Review for World Bank, Millennium Development Goals and Solid Waste Management for Collaborative Working Group, Switzerland; Status of Solid Waste in World Cities for UN Habitat, and issues related to informal recycling sector and value chains for Ocean Conservancy USA for Marine Litter. In the past he has worked as Project Director, Advisor and Consultant in Water, Sanitation, Sustainable Waste Management and Livelihood programs with various organisations like World Bank –WSP, RWA-Bulgaria, Swiss Development Cooperation, MasterCard Foundation, City Bank Foundation, Delhi Government, ERM-Gmbh, Care India, Waste Netherlands, IPE Global, GIZ etc.
