Gyanesh Kumar appointed as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner, EIC bids farewell to Rajiv Kumar

Gyanesh Kumar, who served as election commissioner since March 2024, was officially appointed as chief election commissioner (CEC), on 17 January 2025. This maintains the convention of the seniormost election commissioner being elevated to the top post. However, for the first time, this convention was adhered to with the formal approval of the selection committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Vivek Joshi, a 1989-batch IAS officer currently posted as Haryana chief secretary, has been appointed as election commissioner, restoring the EC’s strength to a three-member body following the retirement of Rajiv Kumar.

Rajiv Kumar, a retired 1988 batch IAS officer, was allocated to the Kerala cadre, and has served several key positions in his home cadre and at the Centre. He retired in January last year as Secretary of the Ministry of Cooperation. He was an Additional Secretary in charge of the J&K division in the Home Ministry when Article 370 was nullified in the erstwhile state. In his farewell address, CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar thanked the 15 million polling officials for their dedication to uphold democratic values. He asserted that the trust of close to nearly a billion voters is unfazed by motivated and uncorroborated attacks on India’s democratic institutions. As a proponent of technology, Shri Kumar outlined a path for strengthening conduct of elections while guarding against the threats of cyber-attacks and misinformation on social media. He lauded the voters for their vibrant participation especially women voters and said that the electoral process is marching towards more inclusivity.Joshi, going purely by the seniority principle, will be CEC after Gyanesh Kumar retires on January 27, 2029.

This convention marks the first instance since the enactment of the CEC and Other ECs (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, that a CEC has been appointed by a collegium or selection committee. Both Rajiv Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu was appointed as election commissioners in March last year, by the selection committee as proposed by the law.

The legislation followed the direction of the Supreme Court to the government in March 2023 to set up a committee comprising the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, and LoP in the Lok Sabha as members until the Parliament enacted a law providing for a collegium process for the appointment of the CEC and election commissioners.

Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairperson and CEO of Salesforce India, has been conferred with the highest civilian award, Padma Shri for her exceptional contributions to the field of trade and industry. Shri Vinayak Lohani serving the ‘Divine in Man’ as taught by Swami Vivekananda, to be honoured with Padma Shri 2025

Shri Vinayak Lohani, a 25 year old young alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta, took a leap of faith opting out of placements for a lucrative corporate career to dedicate his life to those in suffering, following the inspiring spiritual and humanistic ideals of Swami Vivekananda of selfless service. Following the footsteps of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda, he resolved to devote his entire life to serving ‘Divine in Man’ as taught by Swami Vivekananda. In 2003, immediately after passing out of IIM Calcutta, Vinayak started “Parivaar” with just 3 children in a small rented space in the outskirts of Kolkata.

In recognition of his pioneering work in the field of social entrepreneurship, the Government of India has announced that Vinayak Lohani will be honored with the prestigious Padma Shri in 2025. Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. Padma Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year. For the year 2025, the President has approved conferment of 139 Padma Awards. The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri Awards. 23 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 13 Posthumous awardees.

During his time at IIM, Lohani initiated a successful volunteer group, organizing village school visits and health camps. This experience reinforced his belief that people are willing to serve and make an impact if given the opportunity. He reflects, “So, I didn’t participate in the placement process at the end of my course, as my interest had shifted away from academics. Instead, I began visiting various organizations in and outside Kolkata. This exploration phase helped me understand the vast needs in the social sector, which isn’t competitive like the commercial entrepreneurial space. I realized that one doesn’t need a disruptive idea to make a difference, just the willingness to serve where there is a need. I had no grand idea; I was just driven by the desire to do something for society. It was just the spirit of service. So, I started on a small scale with street children, children from red light areas, and other individual cases of crisis. It could be an orphaned child or single mother who is living in very difficult circumstances. That is how Parivaar was born in West Bengal.”

In his early days, when he had no resources, he used to take some lectures for students appearing for Management entrance examinations in order to kickstart his mission and meet the expenses of the set-up, till the level of 15 children at Parivaar. Slowly, his selfless commitment inspired others, and the support began pouring in. By the end of 2004, Parivaar acquired its own land, cementing it for a permanent campus. As its mission gained momentum, dedicated youth joined hands with Lohani, committing their lives to the cause. In 2016, after 14 years of relentless service in West Bengal, he expanded Parivaar’s reach to Madhya Pradesh.

Today “Parivaar” shelters 607 once homeless and destitute children (407 boys and 190 girls) who have found a new foothold, family and a future at Parivaar Ashram. All children receive quality education at Parivaar’s own school, Amar Bharat Vidyapeeth, affiliated with the West Bengal Board of Education. Additionally, over 2,000 children from nearby villages attend its day school program. The institute has developed special methodologies and approaches to accelerate learning whereby illiterate children are able to come abreast of their peer group within a year. As a result the children, despite heavy initial backlog, due to non-exposure to education for the first 8-10 years of life are performing commendably, matching children from more privileged backgrounds and outperforming all governmental and non-governmental organizations working in similar domains.

In 1989, he faced a challenging phase when he had to contest Chief Ministerial orders on file in the Andhra Pradesh Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (APEDC). This experience provided him insights into public administration, CAG, PUC, PAC, and legislative procedures. After obtaining a clean certificate from the government and the court, he redirected his career path, basing his approach on the realizations he had attained in the late 1970s.

Despite facing adversities, he succeeded both professionally and personally, receiving the D.P. Agarwal Rolling Trophy for Best Marketing Efforts from the same Chief Minister in 1988. India has won the Under-19 T20 World Cup for the second consecutive time with a dominant nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the final. Led by Niki Prasad, the defending champions showcased their supremacy at Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, successfully retaining their crown after first claiming it in 2023.

The U19 Women’s T20 World Cup final was a one-sided affair, with India effortlessly chasing down the target of 83, losing just one wicket and sealing victory with 52 balls to spare. Having bowled South Africa out for 82, India needed just 11.2 overs to knock off the runs in Kuala Lumpur.

Gongadi Trisha emerged as the standout performer for India, taking 3-15 with the ball before smashing an unbeaten 44 from 33 balls in the chase. She amassed an impressive 309 runs throughout the tournament while also making an impact with the ball, claiming seven wickets with her deceptive leg breaks. Adding to her list of achievements, Trisha etched her name in history by becoming the tournament’s first-ever centurion.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first but were soon in trouble as they slipped to 20-3 in the powerplay and never recovered.

Runs were hard to come by as India’s spinners took hold and, with wickets falling at regular intervals, the Proteas’ progress was slow before they were eventually bowled out from the last ball of the innings. There were no such problems for India as Trisha quickly put them in control with a flurry of early boundaries.

The 19-year-old already looks like a star of the future and ends as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 309 in seven matches, some 133 runs ahead of England’s Davina Perrin in second.

Sanika Chalke sealed the win, by hitting the winning boundary two balls into the 12th over to start the celebrations for India, who also won the inaugural tournament in 2023. With this emphatic victory, India reaffirms its dominance in youth cricket.
