Address to the Parliament by Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu

The Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, addressed the newly elected members of the 18th Lok Sabha, extending her heartfelt congratulations and best wishes. This significant event marked the beginning of a new chapter in India’s democratic journey, with the President expressing her confidence in the members’ commitment to the spirit of “Nation First” and their roles as representatives of 140 crore Indians.

President Murmu praised the Election Commission of India for successfully conducting the largest election in the world, highlighting the enthusiastic participation of around 64 crore voters, including a significant number of women. She noted a remarkable voter turnout in Jammu and Kashmir, signaling a positive shift in the region’s democratic engagement. The President also acknowledged the historic nature of the 18th Lok Sabha, which coincides with the early years of India’s Amrit Kaal and the 75th year of the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

In her address, President Murmu emphasized the trust placed in her government by the people of India, reflected in the consecutive third-term election of a stable government with a clear majority. This trust, she asserted, is rooted in the government’s dedication to good governance, stability, and the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). The President underscored the importance of this mandate, which validates the government’s mission of service and aims to ensure the nation’s uninterrupted progress toward its developmental goals.

The President highlighted the significance of the forthcoming budget, which she described as a document reflecting the government’s far-reaching policies and futuristic vision. She assured that this budget would accelerate the pace of reforms, fostering a competitive and cooperative federalism that encourages states to attract global investors.

Moreover, President Murmu addressed the global perception of India, noting the country’s strengthened position as a Vishwa-Bandhu (World Friend) and its proactive role in international forums like the G-20 and G-7 summits. She mentioned the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G-20 during India’s presidency, reinforcing India’s commitment to the Global South.

Reflecting on India’s 75 years as a Republic, the President lauded the resilience of the Indian Constitution amidst various challenges. She called upon the members to protect and preserve the trust in democratic institutions, warning against forces that seek to undermine democracy through misinformation and disruption.

President Murmu concluded her address by urging the members to work collectively with a common goal, inspired by the Vedic message of “Samano Mantrah Samitih Samani,” symbolizing unity in purpose. She expressed her confidence that the 18th Lok Sabha would play a crucial role in making India a developed nation by 2047, as envisioned by the citizens. The President’s address was a clarion call for unity, dedication, and relentless pursuit of national development, embodying the aspirations of a vibrant and resilient democracy.
