Mr. Honish Zaveri

A successful IT professional who started his journey in Angel Investing in the year 2021-22 post Covid: Mr. Honish Zaveri shares his journey of success and excellence

Mr. Honish Zaveri is a successful IT professional who started his journey in Angel Investing in the year 2021-22 post Covid. He was and still is an avid reader about the Start-up ecosystem in India. He started with doing small investments in promising early-stage startups to understand Angel Investing process.

Over just 3 years, he has built a portfolio of 10 Startups in sectors like Drones, AI/ML, Quantum Computing, and Consumer Tech. Coming from a technology background, his investment thesis is more focused on Tech B2B startups.

But just investing in startups as a passive investor was not enough for him, and he started thinking about how he could contribute more to the startup ecosystem. He first became a Venture Partner to prominent Angel Funds and Syndicates, scouting startups looking for funding, and successfully helped a Proptech startup based in Pune to raise funds. At that time, he started with the idea of starting his own Angel Investor community/syndicate. So, in January 2024, with just 4 family members to begin with, he started a WhatsApp group named Kiani Ventures. Over 1 year, Kiani Ventures has become a thriving community of 500+ members. Kiani Ventures is now a registered LLP firm and has also received the Startup India Certificate. We have successfully raised funds for Fluttr, a multilingual dating app built for Bharat, and many more success stories are in the pipeline. He is well-connected with the Investor ecosystem in India and regularly connects startups looking for funding with VC funds, Family Offices, and other Institutional Investors.

He is also a visiting faculty at Entrelogy Business School, teaching the subjects of Design Thinking and Angel Investing to the students. He has also successfully diversified Kiani Ventures in offering Pre IPO/ Unlisted Shares to its community members and has facilitated transactions worth more than 1 CR+ within the community.

He is not the person to rest on his laurels. He now plans to connect with Family Offices to help them invest in AIF funds. He is also planning to open an Angel Syndicate in US very soon. Also, he plans to diversify in other asset classes to offer to his Investor community which will help Kiani Ventures to become a full fledge wealth Management Firm.

His inspiring journey exemplifies determination, expertise, and sheer commitment to make India the Startup hub of the world. At IAF, we proudly celebrate him as a visionary leader who is contributing to India’s Startup ecosystem in a big way.

MAKE IN INDIA

Another Landmark Achievement for ‘Make in India’ India’s Smartphone Exports Hit Record $18.31 Billion in FY 2024–25

MAKE IN INDIA

India’s smartphone exports have reached an all-time high of $18.31 billion in the first ten months of FY 2024–25, positioning smartphones as the country’s top export commodity by value, adding to the list of achievements for ‘Make in India’. This achievement highlights the success of the government’s Make in India initiative and the productivity-linked incentive (PLI) scheme in boosting the electronics manufacturing sector.

According to data released by the Department of Commerce, smartphone exports between April 2024 and January 2025 witnessed an unprecedented 54.7% year-on-year growth, up from $11.83 billion during the same period in FY 2023–24. This surge has propelled smartphones ahead of traditional heavyweights like automotive diesel fuel ($16.04 billion), diamonds, and aviation turbine fuel.

Back in 2014, smartphones ranked 167th on the list of India’s export products. The transformation over the past decade highlights the strategic impact of policy support, infrastructure development, and investment facilitation under the ‘Make in India’ program. One of the significant factors is ramped-up shipments to the United States, particularly in anticipation of global tariff tensions, especially Apple’s iPhones. Exports of iPhones to the U.S. soared by 208%, reaching $1.63 billion, while overall smartphone exports to the U.S. stood at $6.6 billion, registering a 64% increase from the previous year.

Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, applauded  this achievement, stating, “Smartphone exports have achieved a new record of Rs 2 lakh crore, making mobile phones among the top exported goods from India. This represents a 54 per cent growth over FY 2023-24, with iPhone exports alone accounting for approximately Rs 1.5 lakh crore.”

The government’s push to domestically produce capital equipment is further expected to enhance India’s self-reliance in electronics and strengthen its role in the global supply chain. The achievement of crossing Rs 2 lakh crore in smartphone exports is a remarkable testament to India’s growing dominance in the global electronics market. As India continues to scale up its manufacturing capabilities, the momentum signals a promising future for the country’s ambitions in the global supply chain for electronics and technology.

A passionate about being a part of social organizations that make a difference in the world with science and research: Ms. Sharvari Narendra shares her journey of success and excellence

Ms. Sharvari Narendra’s journey towards the field of Bioinformatics started with a Master’s degree in Microbiology from India, followed by a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics from Northeastern University, Boston in the U.S.

During her Master’s in Bioinformatics, she interned at the McLean Hospital, where she studied the effect of alcohol use disorder on genes and pathways in the amygdala region of the brain of female mice. This research led to her first author publication in the Nature journal ‘Translational Psychiatry’. Post graduation, she was a part of a research project that studied how genes implicated in COVID-19 were regulated in different lung cell types across age (from newborns to adults) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The manuscript that has been published on this research in eLife has over 150 citations. She joined BatchX (a bioinformatics start-up) as a Bioinformatics Software Engineer post-UCSD, wherein she developed a 16S pipeline from scratch. This pipeline reduced the analysis bottleneck by 600% and was used by >40% of BatchX clients, helping them in their research.

It was when she started working at the University of Virginia (UVA) as a Bioinformatics Analyst that she found her niche in microbial data analysis and antimicrobial resistance surveillance (with public health impact). She is a part of many ongoing projects, one of the most impactful being the “Ring Trial”. She was very instrumental in helping create, analyze end-to-end and complete the very first “Ring Trial” in the United States, under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence Network (PGCoE) grant.

This “Ring Trial” aimed to understand how public health laboratories investigate hospital-mediated antimicrobial resistance outbreaks. She was instrumental in identifying significant gaps in bioinformatics analysis, which helped inform best practices. This project led her to win the first prize at the University of Virginia Research Computing Exhibition 2024 in the “Biological Sciences” category. The project was also highlighted in the CDC PGCoE network’s internal and external newsletter, and she presented it at the 2024 American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Conference on Rapid Applied Microbial Next-Generation Sequencing and Bioinformatic Pipelines (ASM NGS) as a poster. She is currently involved in creating a second iteration of the “Ring Trial”.

Outside of work, she was invited as a guest speaker to “The Bioinformatics Lab” podcast to share her career journey in Bioinformatics. Given her expertise in Bioinformatics, she had been invited to serve as a judge at the Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair (GSDSEF) as well as serve as a peer reviewer for various manuscripts in many prestigious journals such as “Cancer Cell International”, “PLOS ONE”, “Plant Stress”, “STAR Protocols”. She is currently serving as a mentor in the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Future Leaders Mentorship Fellowship (FLMF) Program.

She is also a member of many well-known and established organizations such as American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology (PHA4GE), the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists’s (AOAC) Stakeholder Program on Agent Detection Assays (SPADA) Metagenomics Working Group and the Open Science Data Repository’s (OSDR) ‘Microbes’ Analysis Working Group (AWG).

Aside from Bioinformatics, she is passionate about being a part of social organizations that make a difference in the world with science and research. To that end, she is serving as a member and a secretary of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Subcommittee on the Status of Women in Microbiology (SSWiM). She has also been crucial in writing two books on cancer: “Genetic Testing: A Game-Changer In Breast Cancer Management, by Laleh Busheri (2023)” and “Triumph Over Breast Cancer: Odysseys Of Phenomenal Women, by Laleh Busheri (2018)”, and was a co-editor of the blog “Science for Society” published in 2019

President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu

IAS OFFICERS OF THE 2023 BATCH CALL ON THE PRESIDENT

Recognition Awards

A group of IAS officers from the 2023 batch, currently serving as Assistant Secretaries in various Union Ministries and Departments, called on the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on April 15, 2025.

Addressing these officers, the President said that they had become IAS officers through extraordinary determination and hard work. This has brought about a transformative change in their personal lives. Now with even more determination and dedication, they have the opportunity to bring about transformative changes in the lives of countless people. Their area of service and authority are so vast that they can make the lives of many fellow citizens better in their first posting itself. She advised them to make special efforts for the upliftment of the underprivileged. She also advised them to visit the places of posting during their career journey after some time and see the far-reaching results of their work.

The President said that officers should keep in mind the rights and duties of civil servants. The duties of a public servant are their responsibilities and their rights are the means to fulfill those duties.

The President told officers that their real career story would be created by their work, not by increasing the number of followers on social media. Their real social net worth would be determined by their good work.

The President said that every public servant should work with honesty of purpose. We all face the challenges of environmental pollution and climate change. Pollution of immorality and erosion in values are also very serious challenges. There should be no need to say anything else about being devoted and honest. The people who move ahead following life values of honesty, truth, and simplicity are happier. Honesty is the most desirable policy in public service. It is expected from the public servant that they would present examples of integrity and sensitivity in every sphere of life.

She urged the officers to stay connected with the people, encourage community participation, and address concerns raised by elected representatives. She said that the development and public welfare work done by them at the local and state level would help in achieving national goals.

Carlos Alcaraz-Monte Carlo Masters

Carlos Alcaraz defeats Lorenzo Musetti to win his first Monte Carlo Masters

Carlos Alcaraz-Monte Carlo Masters

Carlos Alcaraz won his first Monte Carlo Masters title on Sunday, overcoming the Italian Lorenzo Musetti in 3 sets [3-6, 6-1, 6-0] to claim his victory. It marks the sixth ATP Masters 1000 trophy for Alcaraz – his first since Indian Wells last year – and an 18th title overall for the four-time Grand Slam winner, and his most prestigious title since winning Wimbledon last year.

“I’m just really happy to have won Monte Carlo for the first time,” said Alcaraz, who lost in his first match on his only previous appearance at the tournament in 2022.

“It’s been a really difficult week with a lot of difficult situations.

“I’m really proud of myself for how I’ve dealt with everything. It’s been a really difficult month for me on the court and outside. Coming here and seeing how the whole hard work has paid off, I’m really happy,” said Carlos on how he coped with a “difficult month.”

The 20-year-old Spaniard got off to a shaky start, dropping his first two service games and committing 14 unforced errors in the opening set. Musetti capitalized on the slow start to take the first set 6-3 and looked forward to a breakthrough victory. However, Alcaraz quickly turned the match around with a dominant second set, storming to a 4-0 lead and ultimately leveling the match

With this win, Alcaraz starts the European clay-court season on a high note as he prepares to defend his French Open title at Roland Garros. He will also move up a place in the rankings and displace Alexander Zverev at No. 2 after beating the Italian, who had already taken down two top 10 players, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur.
