India’s Shubhanshu Shukla Scripts History with Space Mission Aboard Axiom-4

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla etched his name into Indian space history by becoming the second Indian to cross the Karman line, following in the footsteps of Rakesh Sharma. Shukla is aboard the Axiom-4 mission’s ‘Dragon’ capsule, named ‘Grace’, which launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at 2:31am ET (12:01pm IST) on Wednesday.

In the pilot seat of “Grace”, the Axiom-4 space capsule that will take a four-member crew to the International Space Station on Thursday, was India’s second spaceflight astronaut.

“Namaskar, mere praan desh vasiyon”, Shukla radioed to Earth minutes after entering space. “What a ride!” Travelling at a speed of 27,000 kmph, Shukla’s journey marks a major leap in India’s aspirations for human spaceflight. The late Prime Minister Modi’s office issued a statement praising Shukla’s role in India’s sky reaching ambitions.

Shukla becomes the first Indian to cross the “Karman line” in over 41 years, after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s flight on the Soviet Soyuz T-11 on April 3, 1984. Shukla’s message from space: “This isn’t the beginning of my journey to ISS, but I began dreaming of this journey decades ago. Let this not be India’s final frontier.” India aims to send its own space station by 2035 and crewed missions within the next five years.

The Axiom-4 crew includes commander Peggy Whitson (US), mission specialists Sławosz Ukawski (Poland) and Tibor Kapu (Hungary). After a heartfelt crew handover ceremony, the astronauts boarded ‘Grace’ and lifted off amid high anticipation. The capsule separated from the Falcon 9 rocket nine minutes post-launch and began its 20-22 hour orbital chase of the ISS.

‘Grace’ is guided by real-time AI systems, using GPS, radars, and star sensors for navigation. With docking expected at 4:30pm IST Thursday, the crew is set for a 14-day mission aboard the ISS.

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu presented Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awards for the year 2025 at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-II held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 27, 2025. Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were Vice President of India, Prime Minister of India and Union Minister for Home Affairs.

The President of India this year has awarded 139 Padma Awards, including a dual case (where the award is counted as one), with the list consisting of 13 posthumous awardees, 10 foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, and 23 women.

Padma Awards, one of India’s highest civilian honours, are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri for contributions in diverse disciplines/fields, like art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, and others.

There, he established the Online Consumer Mediation Centre (OCMC) and launched the SCOPUS- indexed International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice, where he continues to serve as Chief Editor.

He has authored six books including a comprehensive commentary on the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and over 40 scholarly articles, presented papers in more than 15 countries, and trained thousands of stakeholders across sectors. Born and raised in Guinea, he began his scientific journey abroad, studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Novi Sad in the former Yugoslavia. There, he obtained a graduate degree and later pursued a Master of Technical Sciences in the Department of Large-Scale Systems Control. His academic distinction culminated in a PhD in Chemical Engineering. Determined to deepen his knowledge, he completed postdoctoral research at the University of Mainz and the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany, specializing in inorganic chemistry. These experiences established his strong foundation in both scientific theory and applied research.

Returning to Guinea, he committed his knowledge to advancing his country. As a lecturer at the University of Conakry (UGANC), in the Department of Chemical Engineering, he helped train the next generation of Guinean scientists. His research interests span inorganic materials such as geopolymers and silicon applications, renewable energy from biomass, and environmental sustainability through recycling processes—areas crucial to Guinea’s resource management and technological development.

His impact extends well beyond the classroom. Since 2011, he has served in the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, where he was appointed Head of the Division for Academic Research and Post-Graduation. He spearheaded national programs to renew and strengthen the scientific human resources in higher education and research institutions. In 2015, he coordinated reforms to integrate research into the national health system, reinforcing the role of science in improving public services.

His vision and leadership have been recognized globally. In 2019, he was awarded the title of World Academic Champion in Mining Engineering and received the honorary degree of Docteur Honoris Causa from the International Agency for Standards and Ratings. The same year, he was named Best Researcher in Environmental Sciences by the International Association of Research and Development Organizations (IARDO) in collaboration with Vedant College of Engineering & Technology in India. He also became a full member of the Guinean Academy of Sciences, solidifying his standing among the nation’s top intellectuals.

His expertise has also been sought by international bodies. In 2012, he served as an independent consultant for the UNDP in Dakar, where he assessed Guinea’s potential for biofuel production. From 2008 to 2011, he led a pilot project with Rio Tinto/Simfer, gaining industry-level insights into resource management.

Since 2023, he has held the position of Advisor for Research and Innovation at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation—an acknowledgment of his pivotal role in shaping national scientific policy.
