Poornima Muthukumar, A trailblazer in driving Product Growth using Machine Learning and Data Science
Poornima Muthukumar is a Senior Technical Product Manager at Microsoft who has been working on cutting-edge solutions in various fields such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and distributed software systems for over eight years. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore and a master’s degree in Data Science from the University of Washington. Poornima has 4 patents in Machine Learning and Data Science at Microsoft. She uses her data science and technical skills to create data driven products at Microsoft.
Poornima started her career at Microsoft Ireland Research Center as a Software Engineer. She moved to Redmond, USA in 2016 and became a Senior Software Engineer as part of the MS Office Team, responsible for the design, development and architecture effort to build software systems responsible to deliver all of Office’s Products like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Teams to all customers, across all platforms like Windows, iOS, Android etc. thereby ensuring Office Product’s Software Updates are released each month to millions of users with a high velocity and fewer bugs thereby directly contributing to one of Microsoft’s most successful and profitable product – Microsoft Office. She pivoted her career as a Senior Product Manager at Microsoft in 2022 for the Microsoft 365 Team. As a Senior Product Manager, she leads several key initiatives from defining product vision and strategy, collaborating with cross functional teams to deliver high quality products, tracking metrics and KPIs and mentoring and coaching junior product managers in the team.
Poornima was part of a team that won the Microsoft Global Hackathon in 2016 in the Artificial Intelligence Category. Her patents are a significant contribution to the field of Machine Learning and AI. One of her most notable inventions is a Machine Learning model that can analyze historical bug data and proactively prevent software issues from happening.
Poornima believes in the importance of giving back to the community and sharing her knowledge and experience with others. Poornima is a leader in her profession and beyond. She engages with various communities and delivers insightful talks at industry events. She draws from her rich experience to inspire and educate others. She has been actively involved in mentoring and volunteering at the Product Management Center at the University of Washington Foster School of Business. As an Ambassador for the Women in Data Science Puget Sound Community, Women in Big Data Northwest Chapter and Women Who Code Data Science Community she has been actively involved in promoting and supporting the participation of women in data science in the Seattle Area. She was honored to be on the Grace Hopper Conference reviewing panel for the Software Engineering category this year 2023. Poornima, also volunteered her time being a judge for several hackathons like Microsoft AI Classroom Hackathon 2023-24 and awards like Globee Awards 2023.
