A leader dedicated to transforming urban spaces through innovative, environmentally conscious solutions: Mr. Krishnan Komandur shares his journey of success
With over 30 years of expertise in sustainability and waste management, Mr. Krishnan Komandur is a leader dedicated to transforming urban spaces through innovative, environmentally conscious solutions. As the CEO of the Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative (APCCI), he is at the forefront of efforts to make Pune a cleaner, greener, and more liveable city. Under his guidance, APCCI has introduced cutting-edge technologies, including walk-along, battery-operated litter-picking machines, low-emission vacuum-assisted trucks, pothole repair machines, and mechanical road sweepers—all designed with sustainability in mind. These state-of-the-art solutions not only improve the efficiency of waste management but also prioritize the dignity of labor, ensuring that workers never come into direct contact with waste or debris.
The initiative’s impact is significant: over the past seven years, APCCI has successfully filled over 100,000 potholes, enhancing road safety and city infrastructure. Additionally, the use of water processing plants and innovative Water ATMs has contributed to Pune’s goal of a more sustainable water supply. Central to the initiative’s success is a mobile app that allows citizens to track progress, file complaints, and actively participate in keeping the city clean.
He believes that true success of the APCCI lies in the dedication and passion of its “Waste Warriors” – the team of individuals who work tirelessly, 24/7, to implement the initiative’s vision. Their discipline, commitment to standard operating procedures, and unwavering focus on quality have been key drivers of the program’s success.
In addition to his work with APCCI, he has worked closely with government agencies on waste management and sustainability policies. He has also mentored countless professionals and students in sustainable development practices. Over the past decade, he has helped build a robust network of over 50,000 volunteers, including citizens, youth groups, residential welfare associations (RWAs), educational institutions, and select NGOs. This inclusive network actively participates in environmental drives, reinforcing the idea that sustainability is a shared responsibility.
Through his leadership, he continues to inspire positive change, building a legacy of collaboration, innovation, and community-driven sustainability.
