Dr. Mamta Tomar’s journey exemplifies how scientific innovation, driven by a commitment to sustainability, can effectuate transformative changes in communities and ecosystems for future generations

Dr. Mamta Tomar has dedicated over four decades to the field of environmental pollution control, establishing herself as a pioneer and visionary in sustainable water and wastewater treatment by Bioremediation Technology. Her professional journey has spanned continents, including significant contributions in India and a 21-year tenure as an Environmental Adviser and Consultant at the Ministry of Public Works in Kuwait.

Being a Microbiologist, she has always championed the use of microbes over chemicals for wastewater treatment, aiming not only for efficiency but also for sustainability. Her ground- breaking research led to the development of two revolutionary treatment systems— “BIOREMIDI” and “CHEMREMIDI” targeted at domestic and industrial wastewater, respectively. These systems were approved and widely implemented across multiple industries in Kuwait, including dairies, carpet factories, paper and food industries.

One of her most impactful contributions was the creation of an Innovative and Cost-effective Wastewater Treatment Process named as ABR TM Technology in 2003, using a bio-consortium of strict anaerobic and facultative bacteria. This innovative method treats polluted water without any need for electricity, as the bacteria thrive in oxygen-free environments.

Introduced this technology in India in 2005, and successfully treated over 350 water bodies, including rivers, open drains, lakes, and ponds, and sewerage system, offering a sustainable solution for developing regions.

Her academic journey is equally remarkable. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbial Chemistry through a collaborative research initiative between the National Sugar Institute and IIT Kanpur. Her work on enzyme immobilization significantly enhanced the shelf life of microbial consortia used in bioremediation.

Her expertise led her to represent Kuwait in the International Court in Paris, where she defended the government in a lawsuit concerning faulty odour control systems. She also established a Research Section at the Ministry in Kuwait and presented her acclaimed research based on odour control process at the First Gulf Water Conference in Dubai, where her paper on odour control in sewage systems was awarded best paper.

She currently holds the position of Director and Technical Head at Thetanox Consulting & Envirotech Pvt. Ltd., where she remains dedicated to the remediation of India’s sacred rivers through the application of ABR TM technology. Her professional activities span both the public and private sectors, with her innovative technology being implemented in residential communities, hospitality venues, and commercial complexes for wastewater treatment.

Her technical acumen has also led to her authorship of a widely respected book, “Quality Assessment of Water and Wastewater”, published by CRC Press in 1999, which remains a global reference to this day. She has been honoured by MPW, Kuwait, for this accomplishment.

She has been recognized with numerous awards, including the ‘SHARKRA SHRI’ from the National Sugar Institute in 2024 and the ‘Woman of Excellence Award 2025’ from the Indian Achiever’s Forum, celebrating her contributions to national development and environmental sustainability.

Her career is not just a timeline of professional milestones—it is a testament to how scientific innovation, guided by a passion for sustainability, can transform communities and ecosystems for generations to come.
