India celebrates a proud moment as Lovlina Borgohain secures a bronze medal in women’s welterweight boxing (69kg) at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. With this historic achievement, Lovlina becomes only the third Indian woman boxer to win an Olympic medal, following in the footsteps of Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. Her remarkable journey from a small village in Assam to the Olympic podium is an inspiration to millions.
Born in Golaghat, Assam, Lovlina faced numerous challenges on her path to success. She initially started with kickboxing before transitioning to boxing after being spotted by coaches at the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Through sheer hard work, dedication, and perseverance, she made her way to the world stage, winning medals at the World Championships and Asian Championships before making her Olympic debut.
Lovlina put up an impressive performance in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. She defeated Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals to secure a medal for India. In the semifinals, she fought valiantly against Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey, the reigning world champion, but had to settle for bronze. Despite the loss, her resilience and spirit won the hearts of millions.
Lovlina’s victory marks a new era for Indian women’s boxing and will inspire future generations of athletes. Her achievement has put Assam on the global sporting map and strengthened India’s position in international boxing.
