A Star People Believed In: C. Joseph Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu CM

In a watershed moment for Tamil Nadu politics, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the state's Chief Minister on Sunday morning, ending nearly six decades of dominance by the two Dravidian giants: the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai at 10 AM, where State Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to Vijay, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The venue buzzed with excitement as thousands of supporters and dignitaries gathered to witness the historic occasion.

Nine ministers were also sworn in alongside the new Chief Minister, including KG Arunraj, Aadhav Arjuna, N Anand, Selvi S Keerthana, and Dr TK Prabhu. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was among the prominent guests present, along with several leading faces from the Tamil film industry who turned out to celebrate the rise of one of their own.

Vijay's government was formed with the backing of Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, giving the alliance the support of 120 MLAs-elect in the 234-member House, a comfortable majority that reflects the breadth of the coalition behind the new administration. In his address after taking oath, Chief Minister Vijay appealed to the public to trust his government, promising smooth and transparent governance. Wasting no time, he signed files at the Secretariat enabling 200 units of free electricity for every household, the establishment of a dedicated women's safety unit, and a special taskforce to combat drug smuggling.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay spoke on the phone, with the Prime Minister congratulating the new CM on his oath ceremony on Sunday (May 10).
