Dr. Sanjay Bhutani: A Visionary Leader in Sustainability and Environmental Governance
Dr. Sanjay Bhutani’s journey is defined by intellectual depth, professional integrity, and an unwavering commitment to sustainable development. With a Ph.D. in Applied Chemistry and an M.Sc. in Chemistry, he strengthened his academic foundation through advanced qualifications in Environmental Management, Safety, Ecology, Climate Change, Intellectual Property Rights, and Management Systems—building a rare multidisciplinary expertise at the intersection of energy, environment, and governance.
He devoted over thirty-seven distinguished years to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), where he held critical leadership roles including Head of the Institute of Biotechnology & Geotectonic at ONGC Jorhat, In-Charge HSE for the Assam and Assam-Arakan Basin, In-Charge of CSR Monitoring, Statutory Environmental & Forest Clearances, and Nodal Officer for COVID-19 Response. In these capacities, he strengthened environmental compliance frameworks, enhanced safety governance, and built institutional resilience during crisis situations—setting benchmarks in regulatory excellence and responsible energy operations.
A prolific scholar and mentor, Dr. Bhutani has authored and presented 112 research papers and guided over 170 students in academic and industry-based research projects. His work reflects a deep commitment to knowledge creation, ethical leadership, and capacity building. Currently associated as Professor of Practice (Consultant) at UPES, Dehradun, he bridges industry and academia through innovative teaching, applied research, and policy engagement.
A Certified POSH and POCSO Trainer, Managing Editor of SUSTAINA, and Former Registered Environmental Auditor (IEMA, UK), he continues to influence national discourse on sustainability. His contributions have earned prestigious honours including the Best Teacher Award (UPES, 2024), Environmentalist of the Year (NESA, 2025), and Glory of India Award (IAF, 2026).
