Italy’s Jannik Sinner wins Wimbledon after defeating Carlos Alcaraz

Nannik Sinner

Italian tennis player and the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner sealed his first victory in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon on Sunday against the Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz. He took three hours and four minutes to beat the two-time defending champion Alcaraz in four sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4).

Sinner changed the course of the match in his favour by overcoming first-set loss nerves to win his fourth Grand Slam trophy and first on the famous Centre Court at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The win also snaps Sinner’s streak of five successive defeats against Alcaraz, taking their head-to-head in ATP matches to 8-5 in the Spaniard’s favour. In the match, Alcaraz came back from 2-4 down to break Sinner twice and clinch the first set 6-4. However, the champion showed calmness to break Alcaraz at crucial moments, winning three sets in a row to claim his first Wimbledon crown. Jannik Sinner has become the first Italian to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title. It had never been done before, even before the Open Era. During the post-match ceremony, Sinner engaged in playful banter with his brother, who had come to watch his match. He said, “It is so special because seeing my parents here, my brother, my whole team, it is amazing. A special thanks to my brother because there is no Formula 1 race this weekend, that is why he is here!” He was also emotional after his win and was seen smiling at his box after the match. “It feels emotional because only me and the people who are close to me know exactly what we have been through on and off court, and it has been everything except easy,” he said. “We have tried to push every practice session, even though I was struggling at times mentally. Maybe even more in practice sessions, because I feel like when I play the match, I can switch off and just play. I believe that this helped me a lot.”

It also proved to be Sinner’s first Grand Slam title since his doping ban came to an end, and he also lost to Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final.
