Shiv Sehgal, President and Deputy CEO, Head: International Clients Group, Edelweiss Wealth Management, has topped the corporate ladder at a young age. On the professional front, Shiv provides leadership to Edelweiss Wealth Management—one of India’s largest equity franchises and is responsible for the Capital Market businesses. Having worked in the investment management and financial services industry for more than two decades, he brings a wealth of experience to the table.
Shiv notes, “While I have worked with foreign institutions globally, I see a lot of scope in the emerging market segments, especially the pan-Asian markets. India is at the forefront of this growth acceleration this decade as India’s growth outlook is one of the best in a long time and driven by multiple factors”.
Prior to Edelweiss, he worked with Goldman Sachs Institutional Sales Trading, Equity Capital Markets business in India, and was responsible for the firm’s franchise relationships. He was also appointed to the Goldman Sachs India board to oversee the day to day operations and provide executive leadership on various committees. Before joining Goldman Sachs, Shiv was CEO of Artha Capital, Singapore.
Each experience was invaluable, Shiv opines. A keen observer and fast learner, Shiv was quick to pick up on leadership qualities of his colleagues, peers, and mentors. He avers, “During my initial days, I learnt that one of the greatest gifts you can give to anyone is the gift of attention. Listen to what your team has to say, a lot many problems will be solved at the discussion table itself.”
These are the qualities, Shiv, who is a Chartered Financial Analyst from the CFA Institute, USA and holds a Masters in Banking and Finance from Griffith University, Brisbane, says he observed in his extensive experience of working in long-short emerging market hedge funds in Sydney and Singapore.
Shiv, still has the child like curiosity to learn new industries, technologies and keep innovating himself. He is regularly featured in seminars and articles in Economic Times, ETnow, The Mint, Business standard and other financial journals. He is also a regular speaker and presenter at various India Financial Markets Conferences, global Hedge Fund summits and a regular Jury member for the AIWMI’s 40 under 40 campaign for excellence in the field of alternative investments.
In conclusion, Shiv states that each individual is unique and different, bringing value to the table. A good leader needs to identify the niche, take the team together, and walk the tight rope. Leaders are not individual success stories, there is a large, dedicated team responsible for their success!
