Today, it is vital for driving both ‘Volume and Cost’ of Business” and at the end of the day, goals are simple, Security and Safety, says Avtar Singh, Chief of Security & Intelligence of Aluminium Business, Vedanta (02 Mega Manufacturing Site-Bharat Aluminum Company & VL-Jharsuguda & 1 Alumina Refinery along with multiple bauxite and coal mines across Chhattisgarh & Odisha). As a renowned figure in the Security Industry, he is known for turning around the security function with his ability to drive seamless coordination of people, process, and technology. Mr. Singh holds special expertise in effectively running Security Control Room Operations, Security Automation, Intelligence and Crisis Management. He additionally looks after Admin, Fire & External Affairs at BALCO & Security Automation across Aluminium Business-Vedanta.
With more than two decades of diverse experience and expertise in security, supply chain, sales & marketing & telecommunications, Mr. Singh has a rich and demonstrated history of working in hydrocarbon, telecommunications, metals & mining business. A few years ago, it was under his leadership that the Security Network Operations Centre for Jio was set up and he headed Global Security Operations Centre at Reliance. Mr. Singh was part of the most coveted leadership program called CAP at Reliance.
With his on-going journey at Vedanta for the last three years, he has made significant contributions to the business through leveraging technology, automation & intelligence. This has not only resulted into cost optimization but also improved the overall security posture of the unit. He rolled out the concept of BALCO Security Mitra which enabled him to set up a network of more than 300 informants actively feeding intelligence input into the first of its kind Intelligence Application called ‘Sentinel’. His visionary perspective has helped BALCO to elevate to 1st position across Vedanta in Security Performance. Moreover, he has developed a ‘State of Art’ Centralized Security Operation Centre at Bharat Aluminium Company.
Under the leadership of Mr. Avtar Singh, the Security & Intelligence function has undergone significant transformation. He has achieved Optimization of more than 30% of Security Manpower in the last 03 years through Utilization of technology, Automation, and various strategic initiatives. Mr. Avtar Singh along with the help of IT team, developed an intelligence gathering application for collection, collation and dissemination of Human Intelligence.
Due to discontinuation of Biometric based access authentication during COVID-19 to prevent spread of virus, cases of unauthorized entry & proxy punching spiked. Mr. Avtar Singh along with his Security team in coordination with local IT team developed 1st of its kind NFC enabled application for ‘Identity Verification’. Another initiative showing the full caliber of automation and innovation that has been developed by security team under his guidance is QR-based protection application for employees that helps them track and give timely information or updates about their residence while they are away on leave informing them about real time ‘Safety & Security’ situation of their houses.
Despite very challenging circumstances both in terms of internal and external stakeholders, he has successfully identified and nullified more than 150 threat elements. He has actively improved the percentage of Diversity (Female Officers) from 13.1% to 28% in the Security Department.
