Born and brought up in Kolkata, settled in Pondicherry, Aju Mukhopadhyay is a bilingual poet, author and critic. He began writing in his teens; publishing in his Mother tongue from mid-sixties and in English from nineties of the last century. In his youth he took part in dramatic performances and organized cultural shows. He has published 12 books in Bangla and 27 books in English. He edited three little magazines and is in the editorial /advisory board of some important journals. He is a contributor to many Indian and some foreign journals.
His works are varied in nature from creative short stories, novels, poems including Japanese short verses to essays, features, biographies and travelogues. Besides on literature he has written on environment, wildlife, nature, spirituality and philosophy. His works have been translated in other Indian and international languages and widely anthologised. He actively participated in environmental, ecological developments and in conservation of nature. He has travelled to many countries and participated in many seminars /conferences.
His qualifications include M.A, B.com, CAIIB, CIF, Diploma in French, Cert in Hindi and Sanskrit, Diploma in Book Publishing.
Important books written by him: The Mother of All Beings, The World of Sri Aurobindo’s Creative Literature, On Consciousness, Spirituality and Philosophy, Time Whispers in My Ear (Selected Poems up to 2015) and co-authored Discovery of Self-Who Am I? and Essence of Eastern Spirituality and Western Philosophy.

Following among others are the awards received by him; Certificate of Competence as a Published Writer by the Writers Bureau, Manchester, UK, Albert Camus Centenary Writing Award” by SCWIJ published from Cyprus; Laureate Award in Best Author category (Non-Fiction) by Literoma, Kolkata and A Citation of Brightest Honour” for his contribution in Indian English Poetry and for his pioneering pursuits in influencing mankind towards Communal Harmony and Cosmic Humanism; conferred on him by the International Sufi Centre, Bangalore.
