Introducing Dr. Malasala Murali Nageswara Rao, currently working as UCAR visiting scientist at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NCEP, EMC, University Research Court, Maryland, USA. He is a passionate and hardworking researcher and improvises the Weather and Climate Extreme (Flood, Drought, Heat, and Cold waves) forecasts through Dynamical and Statistical Downscaling Approaches, which are immensely needful for normal citizens to understand the impacts and climate changes and also how it influences crop production.

Dr. Rao received his Ph.D. in Meteorology and Oceanography from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, and a Master’s in Physical Oceanography from the same university. He got All India 26th Rank in CSIR-UGC NET in Earth, Ocean, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences. He worked in an international multi-institutional collaborative (IRI, NOAA NCEP, NCMRWF, IITM, ECMWF, JAMSTEC, ICAR, and IMD) project, “Development and Application of Extended Range Forecast System for Climate Risk Management in Agriculture”. He has more than 16 years of experience in Research and Academics. He worked at Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS), IIT Delhi for 3 years and School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences (SEOCS), IIT Bhubaneswar for 6 years, Department of Meteorology and Oceanography, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam for 1 year, and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India for 1 year and Jackson School of Geological Sciences, The University of Texas, Austin, NOAA NCEP CPC Internal Desks and EMC, Maryland, USA in various research positions.  

 He published more than 40 papers in National and International reputed journals and is also a life member of many professional societies like the American Meteorological Society (AMS), Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), Association of Agrometeorologists, Ocean Society of India (OSI), and Institute of scholars (InSc).

Dr. Rao also participated, presented many research papers nationally and internationally, and was also involved as a resource person in conducting many professional Training/ Workshops across India to increase the capacity building on utilization of weather and climate forecast products in various risk management sectors such as Agriculture, health hydrology, water resources, etc.

Dr. Rao received many awards like the IMS Biennial award 2019-20 (formerly B. N. Desai Award) for the best paper published on “Monsoon Research”. Research excellence award for the study on the “impact of climate variability on various crops in India” from Institute of Scholars (InSc) and Best citizen of India award-2017 for Scientific contribution to Science and Technology from an international Publishing House, New Delhi.
