Introducing Professor and Livelihood linked Climate activist Dr. Ksh. Lal Bihari Singha. In addition to his routine duty for teaching & research, he contemplates to engage & train 1.0 million stakeholders all over India on bamboo-based livelihood options during the next five years, and thus boosting the scope of livelihood generation with eco-restoration. He has taken up the challenge to introduce 1.0 crore bamboo saplings in 50,000 hectare wasteland of Northeast India voluntarily. Citing Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, he says “A developed India should not be just a dream or a vision in the minds of Indians, but we can all take up and succeed to make India developed through collective efforts where education is the most powerful weapon”.

With due understanding on the value of proper education & knowledge in nation building, he realized the significance of utilizing his experience and proficiency into service by joining teaching profession in academic institutions for higher studies viz. NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur University (Central), Imphal, mentoring the youth of the country in Ecology & Environment with development of skills for livelihood options. 

He has 23 years of experience in Teaching and Research in Forestry, Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate change etc. He worked as Visiting Scientist for 12 months in Concordia University, Canada and credited for the development of DNA barcodes for 52 Indian bamboo species. He is also the authority of a unique bamboo species bearing longest internode among the bamboos of the world. Dr. Singha completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Bamboo Ecology and holds the degrees of Master of Philosophy & Master of Science in Life Sciences. He is the recipient of numerous national fellowships awarded by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science & Technology and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Govt. of India.

From the very young age, Dr. Singha has been delivering Consultancy Services to Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency under the National Bamboo Mission, where IFS & SFS cadre were trained for technology transfer to rural sector on bamboo utilization. He also delivered consultancy and mid-term evaluation services for the multi crore projects implemented to Northeast states by Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development and Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Govt. of India.

Presently, he is advisor of eleven NGOs which are actively working in different parts of India. A total of nine scholars have awarded Ph.D. degree under his guidance and currently 14 scholars are mentoring. 

Dr. Singha is credited with more than seventy-five research articles published in Journals of International repute, Proceedings and as Book Chapters. He has also published an edited book on ‘Ecotourism’. He has delivered more than fifty Invited Lectures in different platforms.

Despite his routine teaching & research in Manipur University, he has been delivering free mentoring sessions to a significant number of schools and colleges throughout the Northeast India including Indian Forest Service cadres at different Research Institutes of India. 

In addition, he has launched a mission “Green Gold” during the year 2018 for the plantation of bamboos all over India with the help of two NGOS and established bamboo nurseries maintaining 1.5 crore bamboo saplings for free of cost distribution to stakeholders. 

He is a dynamic teacher & researcher by profession with sanguine perspective in all circumstances and keeping hope for helping in skilled human resource development for self-sustained India.
