Five Decades of Empowering India’s Marginalized Through Gandhian Ideals

For nearly five decades, the Action for Welfare and Awakening in Rural Environment (AWARE) Group, an Indian non-governmental organization, has stood as a beacon of transformation for India’s most marginalized communities. Founded on November 5, 1975, in Hyderabad by visionary anthropologist Dr. P.K.S. Madhavan, AWARE began not as a research project, but as a life-long commitment to uplift the oppressed—particularly the Chenchu tribes, Harijans, and socio-economically disadvantaged women.

Inspired deeply by the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, AWARE’s core belief is that true development comes not from aid alone, but from “awakening”—empowering people to identify their problems, craft solutions, and build lives of dignity and self-reliance.

From a modest start in just three villages, AWARE has grown to reach over 8,760 villages across multiple states. Its wide-ranging impact speaks volumes:

  • Economic Empowerment: Over 3,000 villages have achieved self-reliance, with 2.5 million families lifted above the poverty line. More than 54,761 acres have been brought under cultivation, and 42,137 acres now benefit from assured irrigation—creating over 115,608 employment opportunities.
  • Social Justice: AWARE has liberated 32,254 bonded laborers and redistributed 44,000 acres of reclaimed land to the landless, championing legal empowerment and human dignity.
  • Education and Health: The organization has enabled literacy for 338,655 people—156,000 of them women—and provides annual healthcare services to 250,000 families, along with training for paramedical staff.
  • Environmental Stewardship: With over 300,000 trees planted, 1,100 bio-gas plants constructed, and 24,000 smokeless chulhas installed in tribal villages, AWARE actively promotes sustainable living.

A hallmark of AWARE’s model is sustainability: after 8–10 years, the organization withdraws from a village, having empowered residents to sustain progress independently. Over 6,000 villages now thrive on their own, proving the effectiveness of this exit strategy.

Despite numerous challenges and threats, Dr. Madhavan’s unwavering dedication has fueled a peaceful revolution rooted in Gandhian values. AWARE remains a shining example of how grassroots activism, when powered by vision and trust in community capacity, can reshape the destiny of a nation.

Shubhanshu Shukla Astronaut

Indian Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Gears Up for Historic SpaceX Mission

Shubhanshu Shukla AstronautOn 10th June 2025, Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will be the pilot on the Dragon spacecraft commanded by US astronaut Peggy Whitson with Poland’s Slawosz Uznanski-Wisiniewski and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu as mission specialists on the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) during their 14-day stay on the orbiting laboratory. He is set to fly to the International Space Station next week from a US spaceport aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, becoming the second Indian astronaut to journey into space, nearly four decades after Rakesh Sharma’s iconic 1984 Soyuz mission.

Commanded by veteran American astronaut Peggy Whitson, with Poland’s Slawosz Uznanski-Wisiniewski and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu as mission specialists, the Ax-4 crew will spend 14 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS), conducting over 60 science experiments, public outreach, and technology demonstrations.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch the Ax-4 crew aboard the Dragon from Nasa’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on June 10. While aboard the ISS, the Ax-4 astronauts plan to conduct over 60 science experiments, public outreach and technology demonstrations. The launch was earlier set for June 8.

Shukla, a decorated combat pilot with over 2,000 flight hours, was selected as one of four astronauts for India’s upcoming Gaganyaan mission. Since August 2024, he and his backup, IAF Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, have been undergoing rigorous training across Axiom Space, NASA’s Johnson Space Centre, and SpaceX. “It’s been an amazing journey until now — the best is yet to come,” Shukla said at a countdown-to-launch media conference organised by Axiom Space, a US-based private aerospace company engaged in commercial missions to the ISS and working towards building the first commercial space station.

Shukla and fellow IAF group captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, who’s serving as his designated backup, have been under training for the AX-4 mission since August 2024. All the AX-4 crew have undergone training at Axiom Space, Nasa’s Johnson Space Centre and SpaceX. The training has involved simulations of the launch and docking practice, emergency response drills, space station systems training and scientific payload operations.

“We’re ready to go, we’ve trained for all scenarios, bonded as a team,” said Whitson, who will be commanding her second commercial human spaceflight mission and add to her standing record of 675 days for the longest cumulative time in space by an American astronaut.

Among the experiments Shukla will carry for India are studies on microgravity’s impact on microalgae, including Spirulina—considered a potential superfood for long-duration missions. These experiments, developed through a collaboration between ISRO, India’s Department of Biotechnology, and NASA, aim to advance research on life-support systems in space. As Shukla prepares for liftoff, his mission marks a significant leap for India’s growing presence in space exploration.

Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz wins French Open Final

Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz wins fifth major title after defeating Jannik Sinner in Epic French Open Final.

On 9 June, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner battled in a five-hour 29-minute classic that became the longest Roland Garros final in the Open Era. A forehand down the line winner later, it was Alcaraz who kept his flawless record in major finals alive.

In a French Open final for the ages, Carlos Alcaraz staged a breathtaking comeback to defeat Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 in the longest Roland Garros final in history.

Down two sets and facing three championship points in the fourth, Alcaraz dug deep to save them all and force a deciding fifth set. In the final act, after being broken while serving for the title, the 22-year-old Spaniard regrouped to seal victory in a super tie-break.

With the win, Alcaraz became just the third man in the Open Era to save a championship point en route to a Grand Slam title and only the third this century to defend the French Open crown.

“This was the most exciting match that I’ve played so far without a doubt,” said Alcaraz. “I think the match had everything.”Today was all about believing in myself. Never doubted myself today and I tried to go for it.””Real champions are made in those situations,” he added.

The match was razor-thin in margins. Sinner actually won more total points (193 of 385) and led by two sets and a break at one stage. But Alcaraz’s resilience turned the tide, cheered on by a passionate Parisian crowd.

Both players entered uncharted territory: Sinner had never won a match lasting over four hours, and Alcaraz had never come back from two sets down. Yet on this grandest stage, both elevated their game.

Alcaraz’s triumph came two weeks after witnessing idol Rafael Nadal’s emotional farewell on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Fittingly, Alcaraz’s fifth Slam came at the exact same age as Nadal at 22 years, 1 month, and 3 days, when he reached the same milestone.

With Alcaraz now leading their head-to-head 8-4, the budding rivalry with Sinner evokes comparisons to Federer vs Nadal.

“This is the first match in a Grand Slam final. Hopefully not the last time,” said Alcaraz.

“Because I mean, as I said many times, every time that we face each other, we raise our level to the top.”
