Michael Jordan has rightly said, “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Meet Mr. Tanmay Kumar, who has a career spanning over 21 years in consumer & retail. He has worked with leading companies including PepsiCo India, BURGER KING, Yum! Brands and Spencer’s Retail Limited (RPSG Group).

He is an experienced professional with business and commercial acumen who has expertise in a variety of domains such as strategy, planning, business development, acquisitions, restructuring, commercial operations, information technology, supply chain management, procurement and the different aspects of Finance.
What sets him distinguished is his “ability to execute”. Earlier, he partnered in completing one of the fasted executions of a INR 1100 MM Greenfield plant at PepsiCo within project timelines, with no cost over-run by contributing to project monitoring, financial control, cash flow management. He also led the largest finance team at PepsiCo Snacks and created financial shared services & migrated financial processing for pan- India sales accounting. From PepsiCo, when he joined Yum Brands, he set up processes & in-house finance team for their “owned stores strategy”. With his execution excellence, he led the business development to set up more than 300 stores in two years, for Yum! Brands in India.
Subsequently, he founded & launched Burger King in India along with the CEO & the core group. It was an exciting & challenging journey which started from scratch. He helped expand BK India to 260+ Company-owned outlets in 60+ months & delivered positive EBITDA at the entity level within five years of launch. He nurtured the business for IPO with DD completion & left it with DRHP readiness, leading the work with bankers, auditors, and lawyers.
Recently, he has led financial integration of Nature’s Basket after its acquisition from the Godrej group including cost rationalization, process integration, SAP integration, and migration/roll-out of all policies/SOPs. Nature’s basket turned around in 10 months of integration (which had been loss-making ever since under the previous ownership). Spencer’s retail scaled up OMNI channel business to 10 times during COVID scenario and launched a massive cost savings initiative. Spencer’s brought about significant improvement in Inventory management which led to the delivery of first-ever negative working capital for the business sustained at consolidated business levels.
Tanmay is passionate about harnessing technology for the business. “With time, the essence of the CFO’s role will remain the same, but it would be far more technology-oriented. CFOs have to build knowledge on future developments — Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, the Internet of Things, and where the technological application is heading in the industry”, states Mr. Tanmay.
