Mr. Tambor Lyngdoh, the leader born to lead.

Mr. Tambor Lyngdoh, the Founding Chairman (Synjuk), CCF cum Project Director of the Khasi Hills Community REDD+ Project implemented through Community Action. He has successfully implemented the Community Biodiversity Conservation project through the Village Forest Council Mawphlang. As the founder and the president of the council, he has been able to fully implemented the project from 2002-2007.  

Mr. Tambor Lyngdoh founded the Phriang Jingshai Tourism Society in 2004 presently named as Mawphlang Sustainable Tourism Society. This society was form to cater services to the tourist and researchers visiting Mawphlang Sacred Grove, initiated and pioneered by him during the year 1996. Today there are about 42 trained guides taken care of tourists etc. visiting the grove and trekked the David Scott Trail. He shattered homestay services in Mawphlang since 1998. Mawphlang has been changing through his leadership. Identified more than 40 new tourist spots in the state.

Mr. Tambor Lyngdoh of Mawphlang, Meghalaya has over two and a half decades of experience in conservation efforts.  From 1996-2011, acting as the Secretary for his local governing agency (Hima), he initiated the revival of the nearby sacred grove, introduced eco-tourism to the area, and participated in forest preservation while actively drawing others in to form his current organization, (Synjuk).  He has headed the Biodiversity Conservation Project as the President of the Village Forest Council since 2001.  He is also the recent recipient of the 2020 NatWest Green Warrior Award. The Indian Achievers award 2020-2021, the Wetlands Champion 2022, The Meghalaya State Excellence award 2021. Receiving the Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Excellence Award 2022 & Rastriya Gaurav Award 2022. His pursuits are in sustainable tourism, sacred grove preservation, wildlife conservation, and community development.

Mr. Lyngdoh implemented the first UN REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) project in India, effectively uniting ten indigenous governments to protect and conserve community forests.  This REDD+ project is one of the few in Asia that is managed by indigenous communities.  In tandem, he has mobilized awareness through women’s micro-finance groups, farmer groups, and youth in 100 plus villages to promote the conservation measures. By providing alternatives to forest timber products, the 10,000 households in the project area earn income while protecting forest habitat.  He also initiated the conservation of water bodies like ponds wells and streams. Rescuing and rehabilitation of epiphytes and other faunal and floral species.

Mr. Lyngdoh has successfully introduced the REDD+ project to Ri Bhoi District, West Garo hills District and Manipur through Kuki Community since 2019-2020. He has published a book in memory of his father released on the 10th September 2020 on his father’s 10 death anniversary. The book contained the list of Plants and herbs that can cure different types of diseases and the full case study of Mawphlang sacred groves and poems. The book is sold like hot cakes and was reprinted during 2022. Mr. Lyngdoh has been part and parcel of many governmental organisation in the state and the country as well.
